I feel that consistency is one of the main tools that will get you to success. Success in business, success in relationships, success in health and success in anything you are striving to achieve. It is very rare for one to become successful overnight. It might look like lots of people achieve success overnight but we do not see the years of hard work, pain, late nights and everything else they did to get there. Success comes to those who do whatever it takes and never give up. It comes to those who see things through to the end and aren’t afraid of putting in the work.
The first step in becoming consistent is in showing up. Whether that is showing up to practice, showing up to class or to training or anything else. Nothing is ever going to happen if you do not commit and show up. A good way to make sure you are always showing up is to schedule in time for your practice. Scheduling is even more important when you are self-employed. There is no one that is telling you what to do and when to do it. You have to take control and schedule yourself. Make a list of everything you need to do and then make a timeline and schedule to get it done.
When you are scheduling in time to work on your goals, don’t forget to schedule in rest time or leisure time. The last thing you want to do is burn yourself out. When burn out happens it will lead you to be unproductive for longer periods than if you were to just schedule in down time. I like to schedule in time to take my dog to the park or for walks. I also like to schedule in time for soccer and exercise. Scheduling in time for these fun activities also allows me to stay consistent in my physical health too instead of just always working. I also like to schedule in a day or two off for myself when I hit a major goal of mine. I am the kind of person that needs regular days off to just relax and take it easy.
As you schedule time off and schedule other activities into your life it is important to never be away from your goals for too long. Consistency is about doing something every day to get you closer to where you want to be. Even when I schedule days off, I still do little things like share social media posts, or engage with people that follow what I do or that I could possibly collaborate with. I’ll be reading a book or watching a documentary or something to make me better than I was yesterday. It helps that reading and learning are activities that I enjoy.
One of the most important keys to being able to be consistent is motivation. More specifically, self-motivation. The ability to do the work on the days when you really don’t want to. There will be days where you feel down or tired or sick or just plain lazy. It is these days where you will need to dig deep and show the world what you are made of. It is easy to just say you will do it tomorrow. Do not let tomorrow become a habit. When you are able to knock stuff off your to-do list on these days, it will be the most rewarding. When you hit goals because of what you did on these kinds of days will be the best kind of motivation.
I have had some serious success, engagement, feedbacks and results from doing the work when I did not want to. Remember that everything you do gets you one step closer to where you want to be. There are lots of days where I would rather be out with my dog or my friends than working on my website or writing pages in my book. If I only worked when I felt like working than I would never get anything done. Doing the work is what gives me the time and money to be able to take time off. I enjoy the time off more when I know my work is taken care of than when I am worrying about how much I still have to do.
Consistency means doing what it takes and sometimes having to make sacrifices in order to get where you want to go. There is no such thing as success without a consistent, determined effort in the direction of your goals. The more consistent you are, the more you will achieve and the faster you will get there.
Never give up and always keep moving forward.
